Draco laid down on a flat rock, near a small pond and took a sniff of his surroundings. Beside a suicidal rabbit there wasn't a thing to smell. Well.. maybe there was..
He was close to the den where the pack's alpha female, Rumour, was sitting. Some days ago she had given birth to some pups, but the little ones didn't come out of the den yet. It would have to wait. And Draco didn't suffer from inpatience these days. He knew it wasn't his litter and he knew it was Surge's. Surge was the alpha male of the pack and a particular strong leader! Draco had challenged Surge several times and once he'd gotten himself bitten so badly he couldn't walk right for a few days. This incident happened in the mating season.
This was two months ago now. Big prey had become scarce so everyone in the pack lived by hunting beavers and rabbits. The pack had scattered over the territory in this lack of worthy prey. Aggression had thrown over the pack's ranks and Surge had expanded his might over the pack. Draco raised his head as he smelled another wolf closing in. Cepheus, the old geezer. He was living the seventh year now and he really looked like it. His weakened legs weren't useful for hunting anymore, rendering the old wolf as omega, the lowest rank of all. But Cepheus didn't seem to care about that. He rather took care of Rumour who thanked him by sharing some of the food he brought.
Lucky bastard, thought Draco as Cepheus walked past him, carrying a big lump of meat in his fangs. The younger wolf growled lowly and the older one threw a sharp look at him, before he went on. That was, when it began. The old wolf suddenly seemed to lose balance, struggled to keep standing and then he crashed to the ground when his legs finally gave in. A last shudder, then he lay still. Draco looked at him, confused and shocked, stood up, walked to the obviously dead male and smelled him. He smelled like food.. a carcass! Rumour, who'd observed it, lowered her gaze and looked away. The younger male turned around and started to run to the north.
He would stay there at least another two weeks. Plenty of rabbits and beavers kept him healthy and stuffed and he actually debated with himself if he SHOULD return or not... In the end he did.
Of course the pups had left the den by now. All of them. Draco swallowed hard when he was allowed to come closer to the little ones.
".. You remember that night, don't you, Draco?", was the voice of the alpha female, talking to him from the side. He nodded.
"How could I forget... but I didn't think...."
"They're yours, Draco."
A loud and angry growl broke into their conversation. It was Surge. He had heard it all. Draco didn't have the chance to run before he was jumped at. A bite hit his side and left it bloody, but he counterattacked and actually managed to get the upperhand.. The fight didn't last too long and ended as it had begun. But this time it was Surge's turn to walk away limping.
Draco, the victor of the battle, was now the new alpha and father to four healthy pups.

[[ Just to mention it; In WOLF it's impossible to feed another adult wolf by carrying food to him/her. But it happens in reality ^^]]
